GVHD after Transplant

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a common complication after a transplant using cells from a donor. It is not a complication after a transplant that uses the patient's own stem cells.

Types of GVHD

There are two types of GVHD:  acute and chronic. Both are discussed in great detail in the GVHD section of our website.

The type most often seen in the first few months after transplant is acute GVHD, which can affect the skin, GI tract, and liver.

Chronic GVHD typically occurs later, and can affect many more organs than acute GVHD.

Treatments for GVHD

The first line of treatment for GVHD is usually steroids. Although steroids can help with GVHD, they can also cause significant side effects.

Coping with the Stress of GVHD

Living with GVHD can be emotionally challenging for both the patient and caregiver.
